Vale Of Glamorgan Underage Alcohol Sales Down: Wednesday 24 October 2007
Some 1,064 of 2,683 premises targeted in the tests in England and Wales made sales to young volunteers.
Within the Vale of Glamorgan ten off licences were visited on a total of 36 occasions. Three of these premises made sales to underage volunteers; with four sales being made in total. This gave a failure rate of 11 % comparing favourably with national figure of 14.7%.
The Tackling Underage Sales of Alcohol Campaign (Tusac) ran from May to July 2007 and targeted premises some of which are considered by police and trading standards officers to be “problematic”. These included some premises that had previously failed undercover tests.
The Vale of Glamorgan Tusac leader: Inspector James Hall of South Wales Police said: “Whilst these figures are encouraging there is no room for complacency and further operations are planned this year, we are aiming to stamp out all underage sales.”
Kate Palmer of the Vale of Glamorgan Trading Standards department said: the ‘Challenge 21′ scheme is recommended in order to ensure that sales of alcohol are not made to anyone under the age of eighteen, as it gives a three year ‘buffer’. She said: “Trading Standards also provides advice and assistance to all sellers of age restricted products and any retailers are encouraged to contact us with any queries or for help. We would also encourage the public to report any traders selling to underage children to us on 01446 709105.”
