Walled Towns Friendship Circle

Walled TownsThe Walled Towns Friendship Circle (WTFC) is the international association for the sustainable development of walled towns, walled cities and fortified historic towns. This set of pages provides detailed information, including pictures, of some of these towns, while basic information on many others is to be found on our Research Pages, which are maintained by David Bruce at UWE, Bristol, which has further general information about walled towns and some further development pages.

Membership of the WTFC currently includes 152 historic walled towns, walled cities and fortified towns in Europe and beyond.  To learn more about the WTFC you can read our constitution here.

WTFC was founded in 1989 in Tenby (South Wales) by Peter Osborne, now Honorary Life President. Grants towards the establishment and projects of the WTFC have been made by the European Commission DGXXIII (tourism Unit) in 1990 and 1993.

How Well Do You Know Cowbridge?

CowbridgeThis great new book by Jeff Alden for both locals and visitors covers everything from the new town of Cowbridge and the charter of 1254 to places of interest and Inns. The recent and historical illustrations are married perfectly and give a detailed visual representation of Cowbridge. I enjoyed comparing the old and new and discovered things which despite living in Cowbridge for 30 years I didn’t know. It has spured me on to discover more about Cowbridge.

Priced at £6.00 and available from the Cowbridge Bookshop or online here..

Medieval Cowbridge & Its Charters

Cowbridge CharterOn 13 March 1254, Cowbridge received its first borough charter from Richard de Clare, the Lord of Glamorgan, De Clare was one of the most powerful barons of the day, having huge estates stretching across South Wales and southern and eastern England.

From 1243 he was actively extending his authority in Glamorgan; in 1245 he seized the manors of Llanblethian and Talyfan from Richard Siward, and the lordships of Miskin and Glynrhondda from Hywel ap Maredudd. In Llanblethian he founded the town of Cowbridge and in Miskin he founded the castle and town of Llantrisant.
